MEDICARE AND MEDICAID? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Many people ask us “What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?”. It can be very confusing, but we’ll try to explain.

Medicare is the national healthcare program for people 65 and older and the disabled. Medicare Part A is the part you pay for when you pay social security/medicare taxes while you work. Part B is what most have to pay monthly for once they enroll into Medicare. You enroll in Medicare through Social Security at www.ssa.gov/medicare . Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (Prescription Drug) plans are available for enrollment through private insurance companies. Medicaid a State run program that gives care to the most vulnerable among us. There is no requirement to pay into social security to qualify for Medicaid, but there are limits such as income and resources you must fall under in order to qualify. This is coverage for many different people including the elderly, low income, medically needy, and families with children. The name for Medicaid can be different from state to state. You can find out more about Medicaid by going to http://www.medicaid.gov/medicaid/by-state/by-state.html . There are Medicare/Medicaid (Dual) plans available for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid. Let us know if you’d like to find out if you have options available to you.
